Fake It ‘Till You Make It
Sometimes you have to fake it until you make it.
This little piece of 12-step program advice isn’t just for folks in recovery.
You can use it when you feel tired, overwhelmed, overwrought or just plain ready to throw in the towel.
Don’t Go to the Dark Side
There are a million different ways to succumb to what I call the dark side. For me, I start slipping in that direction after a prolonged period of not getting enough rest combined with long stretches of stress.
From there, it is so easy to slide right into the F-its. You know the mental place I’m talking about. The place where your brain says, “Who cares? What’s the use? Why should I keep busting my butt when nobody gives a rat’s behind anyway?”
Instead of crashing headlong into that particular F-it, let’s switch it up and go with: Fake-it!
Force the Fake-its!
Someone has to be the one to try to sweep away the gloom. Why shouldn’t it be you?
Why not try to be the bright spot, the ray of sunshine, the glass-half-full person who irritates the poop out of the ones wallowing in their own negativity?
Yes, it takes a great deal of effort to be the one to say, “Enough!” Eventually, you’ll get caught up in your own attempts to turn the tide that you’ll start to feel better.
Isn’t that what it’s all about?
To aid your efforts, I put together this list of action steps. Take one or take them all but know that the more you take, the easier it is to fake and before you get to the end of the action steps, you’ll realize that you’re no longer faking.
You’re making it!
Refuse to play the drain game.
Risk appearing like Pollyanna.
Release all those negative vibes.
Rant about the good.
Relish your own sense of peace.
Respond instead of react.
Relegate doom to the back room.
Realize the girth of your worth.
Rally the positive thinkers.
Reassure yourself that you’re alright.
Romance the desires of your heart.
Romp and play through your day.
Rustle up herds of laughter.
Reward yourself with rest.
Rinse and repeat tomorrow.
Now go out and have a Mindful Monday!
